Please remember that tomorrow is the bone marrow donor drive in honor of Sydney Balzer, Commerce Elementary 4th grader. Please consider attending and helping find Sydney’s hero. Commerce Elementary teachers will entertain your kids in the “Kid Zone” while you go through a short registration process. Picture Retake Day
Pictures were sent home this week. If you wish to have your child’s picture retaken, please return the uncut package to your child’s teacher on retake day, November 8, 2013.
If your child will be absent or late to school, please call the absence hotline at 248-956-3990. If you are bringing your child in tardy to school, you must bring them into the school and sign them in. Thank you.
Notes from the Music room
Grades 4 & 5: Monday is Recorder Day! Every Monday will be recorder day in Music class for the remainder of the school year. Please send your child with their recorder every Monday beginning November 4th. If you need to purchase a recorder, order forms will be available in the Music room. You may consider ordering a second recorder so your child has one to leave at school, and another for practicing at home. Instruments are $5.00 each. Thank you!
Talent Show…..Save the Date! This year’s Talent Show will be held at Walled Lake Northern on March 19. Dress rehearsal will be on March 18. Audition information will be sent home in January.
Commerce Cougar Choir…..Save the Date! Choir will begin in January 2014 for all interested 4th & 5th grade students. We will rehearse after school on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:00 beginning on January 15th. Performances will include: the Talent Show, a collage concert in May featuring 5 Walled Lake choirs, and potentially a Music In the Parks performance in the Spring (Date & location TBD).

Candy Collection for Donation
Mrs. DuBay will begin her annual Candy Collection on Friday, November 1, 2013. Halloween candy will be collected outside the gym for ONE WEEK. Please send in any unwanted and not needed candy to the gym. Help save your child’s health and make a difference for our Troops! All candy will go to the Military Moms Organization. Candy will be collected from November 1st through 8th. Our GOAL is to collect 7 tubs this year!!!
SMENCIL sale is still going on! Help support SMENCILS for Pedersen and our schools student council. All SMENCILS are $1.50 each and can be purchased before school and during P.E. class.
Friend of Diversity Award Information
The Walled Lake Schools is currently seeking nominations for the “Friend of Diversity Award.” This award will honor individuals who are true friends of multicultural diversity in our school district and community. This honor will be bestowed upon the recipients at the district-wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on January 20, 2014 at Walled Lake Northern High School. Any staff member, student, parent or community member is eligible. Any person in the community may submit a nomination. Nomination forms for the “Friend of Diversity Award” are available in each school office or attached for your convenience. Please submit your nomination to your school office by the deadline of Friday, November 22, 2013.
Introduction to Instruments – 5th Grade
During the next few months the Instrumental Music Department will be visiting all the 5th grade students several times to present the“Introduction to the Instruments” series. 5th graders already had their first visit where they watched a video introducing them to the instruments in the band and orchestra. Commerce Township Community Library News
There’s a lot to be thankful for at the library in November! Commerce Township Community Library offers free programming and storytimes for all ages, as well as the best new books and helpful homework resources. Don’t miss our Diary of a Wimpy Kid party on November 7, Lego Club on November 14, a visit from storyteller Karen Czarnik on November 21, and STEM Storytime onNovember 28. FALL FAIR THANKS

KIDS IN CHARGE
We still need volunteers for our Kids in Charge program. We especially need several for 5th grade which starts next Thursday.
Mrs. Keller’s class won the Box Top contest. We collected $1,781.40 for the Fall contest. Way to go, families! Keep clipping and saving those little squares!
